Hey Gators, the September game is coming up (starting Wednesday the 15th)! Make sure you’re registered and have all your gear.

I’ll be sitting this one out, but I’m sure you guys’ll have a blast.

And as for documentary news…on hiatus but it’ll happen.

The mission everyone had horror stories from last game was “The Massacre at West.” I’m pretty confident in saying that this mission makes that one look like a cakewalk.

-

The e-mail came through at 8:55pm on April 7th:

-

Oh god I hope this works. I have been trying to send this for the last twenty minutes. sorry to be late for our agreed communication. Also, I hope this is an actual line of communication. Anyway, I have met one of you. He is waiting at a building to give you more information. Mathison? Matherson? Mainly? I don’t recall. Anyway, find him, and get the information from him.

Stay Vigilant

-

We knew immediately he was talking about Matherly Hall. The Gentlemen marched in from the east side of campus to investigate the situation.

-

Right away there was an unsettling feeling. The e-mail listed one location. That meant that everyone, human and zombie alike would be in the same place around the same time. That never ends well for the humans.

-

The Resistance got into Matherly and were soon met by Mod3. He told us we had 12 minutes before we had to evacuate the building. Somewhere on campus (we deducted the O’Connell Center) Dr. Schmitt had vital information and needed humans to get to him.

-

We blasted our way out of the building but were met with a horde that was just too powerful for our numbers. Our trek was going to be a long one. Matherly is a good 10 minute walk from the O’Connell center, and that’s when you don’t have to worry about shooting zombies and moving a bunch of humans.

-

Somehow we made it to through the arts building, past Broward, and finally took refuge in McCarty. We lost many along the way, including leader of the Basterds, Nick LoCastro.

-

The surviving resistance members went inside desperate for a plan of escape.

To be continued…

We received orders for the second mission at 6:48pm on April 6th. We were held up in the Hub when the e-mail came through.

There were some very vague objectives:

  • There have been reports of a merchant that sets up a shop for survivors. He constantly moves around, for security, but it would be in the interest of the resistance to meet this gentleman. If he even exists. One sketchy phone recording indicated he went by “Mad Jack”.
  • ~
  • There’s one crazy rumor going around that some guy actually saw this entire thing coming. The thing is, he stockpiled a large cache of ammunition and weapons and food and puppies someplace on campus. It’s more than likely just some rumor, though.
  • ~
  • One man came forward to say he saw the original zombie himself using a laptop computer. Is that even possible? Have the zombies become intelligent enough to use technology? You may want to investigate. How? It’s not like you can interrogate a zombie.  Who is that guy, anyway? Hey, where’d he go….?
  • ~
  • Legend tells of the One Hidden Blade. The OHB remains hidden from the world until a time of desperate need, when a true hero can summon the nerve to draw it from it’s resting place, and use it to banish evil from the land. But like I said: it’s a legend.
  • ~
  • Where did the virus come from? Someone said researchers on campus had something to do with it. After all, the outbreak started here, so the virus must have too. If those scientists are still alive, they’d be an invaluable resource.
  • ~
  • Zombies seem to have a hierarchy this time. Certain zombies have amassed enormous kill-counts, and the others seem to follow them. Shooting those zombies carries with it a certain prestige, does it not?

  • The Gentlemen coordinated with The Basterds and we decided to try our luck at the College of Veterinary Medicine. For some reason we thought “puppies” was code for that. No, not even close. The wild goose chase went on for quite some time. We walked up 13th, across campus, had no luck with the objectives and ran into a small number of zombies. Frequently I’d call Nick in hopes that the basterds were having more luck than we were. They weren’t.

    -

Finally we got to the Reitz Union. Mad Jack had been found and the “weapons cache” was rumored to be a few socks. We were on our way to Little Hall in search for the scientist when he, seemingly out of nowhere, ran into our group.

    -

“Dr. Schmitt” was panicky and pessimistic. He couldn’t offer us much except that he was working on a cure and that we would probably all be dead very soon.
The Gentlemen were tired and ready to call it a night when a distress call came from The Basterds. They were surrounded at the Hub and needed a way out. We were the only ones left, and there were only 8 of us. But, we couldn’t give them up without a fight.

    -

We dropped in from McCarty and snuck up on the zombies. The Basterds were to start pushing out when they saw us coming. We distracted the zombies and formed up with our fellow resistance members. Luckily we managed to get the whole group of us out of there, suffering minimal casualties.

    -

Tonight we were lucky. The horde had thinned out a bit by the time we got there. It’s not going to be this easy next time.

It’s good to see that there are people on campus who get a kick out of our game, even when they aren’t playing it.

    -

The first mission involved going to Marston Library where the librarians had set up an entire scavenger hunt for us, all zombie related, and at the end of it had cupcakes, candy brains, and Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (which by the way, is an awesome zombie movie).

    -

Both humans and zombies got to participate and had to complete 5 tasks. The librarians incorporated the zombie theme with using their online databases and resources throughout the building. Seriously, these people are awesome and did a great job catering to our common interest.

    -

After woofing down a delicious cupcake, I met up with the Gentlemen and the humans formed up outside to escape Marston and await further orders. Our group, plus a few others, moved to the Hub facing only a few zombies on the way.

The Independent Florida Alligator is posting daily coverage of the game on its Web site.

It was bound to happen at some point. The Independent Alligator published an editorial today, calling the players of HvZ, “…the result of allowing socially stunted children to escape from Neverland Ranch before they were allowed to climb Mr. Jefferson’s wishing tree.”

You can read the article in its entirety, here: Zombie Nation

    -

Grant it, there was also a cartoon in defense of using Nerf guns on campus, making them out to be trivial in comparison to much more harmful things.

    -

I’m not just a filmmaker but I’m also a participant in this game. I’m playing because I want firsthand experience so I can make a better film but also, and just as importantly, because HvZ is fun. A LOT of fun. And I’m not sure what the bad wrap is all about. Your typical college kid sits around playing a lot of Halo and Call of Duty on their XBox… isn’t this better than that? Something that involves actually going outdoors, getting exercise and communicating with people?

    -

I can see how people not interested could get annoyed with the influx of fliers and promotions on campus… but again, I think it’s better than the usual stuff. Turlington being filled with “zombies” is a lot better than having to hear from the people in organizations like “Islam is the Devil.” I’d prefer to see some posters promoting this game than ones advertising clubs where you can come get drunk and fucked this weekend.

    -

I’m not saying everyone has to like it. But if you’re going to spend time hating on something, make it something that’s a little more evil than a game of tag. Like, how Chile needs just as much support as Haiti does right now and has gotten a fraction of the news coverage. Or the suicide bombers in Russia. Or… yeah, pretty much anything else.

    -

And to those of you playing this game and reading this blog, don’t let their words discourage you in the slightest. Feel sorry for them because they don’t get it.

It’s happening all over again. Except this time it’s worse. Much, much worse. Almost 300% worse in fact.

    -

    The stakes are higher.

    -

There are 1087 registered players of HvZ.

    -

Today: no guns until the first confirmed kill is made. Survival means chucking socks and cardio.

    -

And to one lucky human, there is a melee weapon somewhere on this battleground of a campus.
